Decommissioning a MOPU – Turning Limitations Into Innovation

An oil major required the urgent decommissioning of a Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU)after large cracks were discovered on its legs and mud tank. The classification society only approved a tow to the nearest port—which lacked the facilities for full decommissioning.

The client faced the prospect of carrying out expensive and time-consuming temporary repairsto either wet tow or dry tow the MOPU to a distant decommissioning yard. This was not only costly but also carried significant schedule risks.

That’s where Hayat Lestari Holdings was engaged. By combining engineering expertise and operational creativity, we developed a complete in-port decommissioning concept—eliminating the need for long-distance towing.

To execute this pioneering solution, our team:

  • Designed and built specialized equipment, including three chain pullers with 300T linear pull capacity each

  • Developed and deployed three diamond wire cutterscapable of cutting through the MOPU’s massive 3m diameter legs

  • Carried out the project successfully during Malaysia’s COVID-19 lockdown, overcoming unprecedented logistical and operational restrictions

The project was delivered safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with regulatory requirements. It stands as a landmark achievement, proving that with creativity, planning, and custom engineering, even the most complex offshore decommissioning challenges can be solved without relying on conventional shipyard facilities.
